Have you come across number bonds in your child’s math curriculum? Parents who grew up with “traditional math” (like myself) might dive into a strong math program like Singapore Math or Math with Confidence and feel like what the heck is going on. Why can’t we just learn that 2+3 = 5. What’s with all the talk about it?
This short video explains the basics!!
In it, you’ll learn:
- What number bonds are actually showing
- The importance of building a strong number sense for young kids
- How to use the concrete – pictorial – abstract sequencing with number bonds specifically
- How to use a part part whole mat with your number bond lessons.
I use the part-part-whole mat & number bond templates with my kids starting around age 5 and I use them as long as they’re necessary/ interested.
This teaching process will help your child build a great foundation for easily memorizing all those addition/ subtraction facts AND a strong number sense for higher level math reasoning down the line.

If you want to learn more about how to actually teach math to your very young child, I’d recommend binging Kate Snow’s entire blog. She has a great index of her best posts here. Just set aside 10-15 minutes a week to read one or two articles.
This may sound silly, but try to picture actually teaching your child whatever she is describing. Then, experiment with a kiddo or pull in some of what you learn from her website alongside whatever curriculum you’re using.
I’m increasingly convinced that ANYONE who wants to can teach their child at home peacefully & joyfully!! It takes time, sacrifice, and a cheerful, willing spirit, but YOU CAN LEARN THIS.
